P.J. is a character that was introduced in 1969. She was "Barbie's Best Friend" and acted as a trendy replacement for Midge. When children wrote to Mattel asking what the letters in her name stood for, they were told: "Nothing! P.J. is her name!" In one interesting case (1983's Dream Date P.J.) , P.J. was billed as Barbie' doll's cousin. She was eventually discontinued in the 1980's and Midge was reintroduced.
