Lea / Kayla is a face sculpt patented in 2000 and first introduced in the Amazing Nails doll line with Amazing Nails Lea and Amazing Nails Kayla.
Overview[]
The sculpt is officially known by both names Lea and Kayla because the sculpt was created initially for them and both dolls introduced the face at the same time. After the Oriental / Miko / Kira (Face Sculpt ©1980) face was retired for a brief period, the Lea / Kayla face replaced it as the standard Asian face sculpt in the Barbie line for 2002 and onwards. Lea is a pale girl of Asian descent, while Kayla is a brown girl of Hispanic and Pacific Islander descent, as the face sculpt was designed to be versatile and change ethnicities depending on how it is painted and in what skintone it is presented in. The sculpt was initially created for playline dolls but became popular for collector dolls as well, due to its versatility and being able to depict many different races and ethnicities such as Caucasian, AA, Hispanic, Latina, and Asian dolls. The sculpt also had a brief performance as the face of Kira for the Fashion Fever line.
Overall, Lea / Kayla proved to be a popular and fan-favorite face sculpt, and is usually the standard face used for Barbie's Asian friends and Asian versions of Barbie ever since. The sculpt also proved to have longevity, as it has never stopped seeing use after being introduced in 2002.
