Barbie Girls® was a website that was accessible from 2007-2011.[1] The website was named BarbieGirls.com.

Launch and Features[]

The website launched in 2007. In the UK, Samanda did a commercial to promote it. They also released a cover of "Barbie Girl" that year. On the website, users could choose a screen name and password, and have their own Barbie Girls avatar with various hairstyles, makeup, clothing and accessories to pick from. Some things were only available by purchasing a Barbie Girls Player and connecting it to a Windows computer via USB port.[2] Users could decorate a virtual room, play games, earn B Bucks®, have a B Chat™ with online friends, and more.[3] The users were anonymous and not allowed to share or exchange personal information. There were 1-month, 3-month and 6-month VIP Memberships.[4]

Closure[]

The international websites shut down on April 30th, and BarbieGirls.com closed on June 1, 2011. Mattel wrote, "BarbieGirls.com is closing as the Barbie brand is exploring new opportunities where girls can experience the best of Barbie.  We are committed to providing girls with the best play experience both on and offline. You and your daughter are valued customers and we truly appreciate your participation in the Barbie Girls world and hope that you will continue to play with Barbie online at Barbie.com."

The website updated the B Chat phrases so that users could say goodbye to their virtual friends. Refunds were offered to people who bought VIP Memberships. Virtual items were no longer available after the website closed, so users were encouraged to download snapshots of the website by clicking the Games & Pics tab. Three of the most popular games were still available to play on the Barbie.com Virtual World page.[5]
