Announcement[]
The artist lineup for Barbie: The Album was first announced on May 25, 2023 on social media through Rollingstone and the Barbie album account. The song titles and physical releases were announced three days later on May 28, with two tracks and artists yet to be announced.
On June 6, Billie Eilish was revealed to be one of the unknown artists featured on the soundtrack with the song "What Was I Made For?".
Formats[]
Barbie: The Album is available on all streaming services. Eight vinyls were announced and made available for preorder on May 28, five of these being exclusive to US retailers, while three variants were released internationally (the "Sky Blue" and "Hot Pink" pressings being exclusive to the Barbie The Album Shop and being available Internationally, while the "Neon Pink" pressing is an Urban Outfitters exclusive in the US, but was made available internationally in various retailers). Three cassette variants and one CD were also made available for preorder internationally on the same day.
Marketing and promotion[]
An album listening party was held on June 13 in London on JOIA rooftop. The producer of the album, Mark Ronson and various actors, influencers and artists were invited, to gain the album more online publicity on social media.
The scene of Ryan Gosling singing I'm Just Ken was exclusively released online on July 10 by Warner Bros. Pictures to promote both the movie and soundtrack.
All of the soundtrack's artists were invited to the Barbie world premiere, where various song snippets were shared by the artists themselves, such as Choose Your Fighter by Ava Max.
Unreleased songs[]
On July 10, "Cyn" shared a snippet of her song I GOT HOT FRIENDS on her twitter account, which was intended to be on the soundtrack but did not get chosen. It may have been replaced by Speed Drive, since both songs are about "hot friends".
"Half A Man", a demo by Madison Love for Ava Max, was also rejected, getting replaced by Choose Your Fighter.
Charli XCX also had another song called "Barbie Girl" that interpolate the version by Aqua. It may have been replaced by Barbie World however.
Singles[]
Dance The Night by Dua Lipa was announced as the lead single of the album on May 22 and released on May 26, along with the music video.
WATATI (feat. Ando Ranks) by KAROL G was released a week later on June 2nd, serving as the second single, with the music video releasing on June 15.
Angel by Pink Pantheress was released as the first promo single of the album and third song released overall of the soundtrack. The track was announced by Pink Pantheress on June 2 and released on June 9.
Barbie World (with Aqua) by Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice was released as the third single and fourth release overall on June 23rd along with the music video and was announced on June 11. It samples the iconic song "Barbie Girl" by Aqua.
Speed Drive by Charli XCX was announced as the fifth release overall on June 20 by Charli XCX herself and released on June 30.
Barbie Dreams (feat. Kaliii) by FIFTY FIFTY was released on July 7 without an announcement prior.
What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish was announced on July 6, revealing one of the secret artists featured on the soundtrack. It was released on July 13. A music video was also released the same day.
Man I Am by Sam Smith was announced on July 10, revealing the final secret artist featured on the soundtrack. It was released on July 21st, along with the soundtrack.
