1991 Asha Doll
Asha is a face sculpt patented in 1990 and first introduced with the Asha character in The Marvelous World of Shani doll line.
Overview[]
This face sculpt debuted alongside Shani (Face Sculpt ©1990), Nichelle (Face Sculpt ©1990), and Jamal (Face Sculpt ©1991) in the aforementioned Shani doll line. The series was discontinued after 3-4 years but the sculpts and even the body continued to see use in the Barbie line ever since, Asha's face especially. After 1993 with the last Asha doll, the sculpt was on hiatus until it resurfaced with Hula Hair Barbie AA version in 1997, and would occasionally be used for collector dolls afterwards. Since then the sculpt became notable for unofficially becoming Christie's new face in the late 90's and 2000's. It was even used as the official face for Nichelle Williams in the Generation Girl line, Shawnee in the Mystery Squad line, and for Nikki in the Fashion Fever line. The face was also unofficially Barbie's new face for AA counterparts of Barbie dolls throughout the 2000's, replacing the previously used Christie (Face Sculpt ©1987) that was used as Christie and AA version's of Barbie's face throughout the late 80's and 90's.
Overall, the Asha face proved to have the most longevity and versatility out of the four face sculpts introduced in the Shani line, as it has never stopped seeing use after its debut in 1991 and continues to see use for AA version's of Barbie and Barbie's friends ever since. It has seen much more frequent use out of all the sculpts in the Shani line.
