She was designed by Stacey McBride-Irby, who would go on to design the So In Style doll line.
Description[]
Alpha Kappa Alpha Barbie commemorates the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, which made history in 1908 when it was founded as the first sorority for black women. This doll celebrates the hundred-year legacy for black women and their inclusion into American collegiate society. Her gown features the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority's official colors, salmon pink and apple green. Additional accessories include the strappy pink heels with gems, a bracelet, and a ring.
Trivia[]
- The Mbili sculpt was chosen for this doll purely because it's McBride-Irby's favorite Afrocentric Barbie sculpt, and would use it for all of the characters in the So In Style line.
- The doll was first sold to sorority members at the 100-Year Anniversary Convention in Washington D.C. and sold out almost immediately, with the leftovers going to retail sites like Walmart.
- Though a Pink Label, she is a highly sought-after doll due to its meaning to women who are members of the sorority, and soon became one of the most expensive collector dolls on the secondary market. Her value increased further with Kamala Harris becoming Vice President of the United States in 2020, as she is a member of the sorority.
